The Mercedes-Benz M-Class in the W164 body was first presented at the Detroit Auto Show in early 2005. It shared a technical base with the R-Class (W251) and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. The frame structure used in the previous model was replaced by a load-bearing body, which resulted in improved passive safety, but reduced the vehicle's off-road capabilities.
